A smart e-marketer knows that email autoresponders drive sales and increase internet presence. Autoresponders can deliver your targeted messages 24 hours a day – anywhere – any time. But do your autoresponders bring you the results you need? If your prospects are not turning into clients, your autoresponder message needs a new approach, and some fresh thinking.

Do you feel uncomfortable about writing your own autoresponder? That is ridiculous. Who alone knows your product, service, or organization, better than you? Your clients are not looking for an award winning essay, creative writing, and fancy terminology. Remember, they have already opted-in. They want to receive more information.

  1. It’s not all about you. Where is your focus? A good autoresponder is letting the client know how your product or service will meet their needs. Don’t be afraid to make a bold statement in your first few lines. Use those lines to capture their attention. But make sure that statement is true!
  2. Reach out and touch someone. Have a personal voice and personality in your autoresponders. It is your message, isn’t it?
  3. Have a focused introduction to your product. Do not use information overload. The most important facts about your product or service need to be explained. Think of sitting down with a potential client in your mind and explaining this out loud. That will help give you clarity as you write. If the text is lengthy, give them a link to your site to complete the article.
  4. Stress the benefits of your product. Explain how their life or business will improve, if they use this product. Suggest ways to use your product that they may not have thought of. Be specific, a bit creative, and concise. Create interest, not boredom.
  5. The famous “call to action.” Make sure you have a clearly defined call to action. Do they need to go to your website to begin the purchase procedure? If so, test your link before sending. Do they need to call a toll-free number? Check for typos. Whatever your call to action, your autoresponder should display that information in an easy to find format. This is the Key ingredient and they may not try twice, if the first time brings frustration.
  6. Your layout matters. When you plan your autoresponder message, you must consider its design and where you want your client’s eyes to focus. Consider these few tips:
    • Headlines look good in caps.
    • Keep paragraphs short and concise
    • Parse information attractively. Don’t squeeze everything together.
    • Use your white space to direct and focus attention where you want their eyes to go.

Your autoresponders, even though they are not officially letters or documents, are representing you. Even if you write a simple autoresponder, you must always use proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Your clients may never meet you, see your picture in the newspaper, or join your twitter page. The only picture they have is the one you mail them.
